Pharmacy Technician Program
The Pharmacy Technician Training Program at MIHC is designed to provide the necessary educational background and training for graduates to become proficient in the execution of their duties and knowledgeable about the delivery of patient and customer care.
Pharmacy technicians are vital members of the healthcare team. According to the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) , they are “individuals working in a pharmacy, who under the supervision of a licensed pharmacist, assist in activities to provide prescribed medications and other healthcare products to patients.”
There is a high demand for trained pharmacy technicians nationwide. Employment is expected to grow much faster than average for healthcare professions through the year 2016.
A career as a Pharmacy Technician is a job skill you can use no matter where you live. Pharmacies and hospitals throughout the country depend on pharmacy technicians for efficiency and productivity. They are always looking for trained and reliable pharmacy aids to develop and maintain their businesses.
Pharmacy Technicians assist licensed Pharmacists in providing medications and other health care products to patients. Daily tasks include inputting patient information into the computer, preparing prescribed medications, such as counting tablets, mixing and labeling them, providing customer service, stocking shelves and operating cash registers, processing insurance claims and many other responsibilities as directed by the Pharmacist.
The experienced faculty at Madison Institute of Healthcare Careers will prepare you with techniques and practical skills necessary to obtain entry-level employment as a Pharmacy Technician in retail pharmacies, clinics, hospitals, HMOs, medical offices, medical supply houses, mail-order pharmacies or pharmaceutical manufacturing firms.
The program is 6 weeks and includes instruction in all phases of the pharmacy field:
- Drug products and their preparation
- Common Calculations and Dosages
- Dispensing techniques
- Inventory Management
- Third-party billing
- Laws and ethics
Students who complete the program in a satisfactory manner will be awarded a Certificate of Completion and are qualified to apply to the Illinois State Board of Pharmacy for registration as a Pharmacy Technician. In addition, the student is eligible to sit for the national certification exam.
Program Admission Requirements:
- High School Diploma or GED certificate
- Completed Application Form
- A personal interview prior to enrollment. The admissions representative will clearly outline all the programs, benefits and schedules.
- No healthcare or medical office work experience is required
Program Basics:
- Certificate of Completion requiring 10 weeks to complete
- Classes in the mornings, evening and during weekends
- Student much achieve a “C” grade or better (70%) in the course to be eligible to progress and obtain certification.
