EKG Technician Program
The EKG Technician is a vital part of the Health Care team. The program provides an in-depth study of the theory and practice of electrocardiography (EKG), a non-invasive tool that assists in the identification and diagnosis of heart (cardiac) and lung (respiratory) illnesses. The basic course prepares the student in the following areas:
- Medical Terminology
- Anatomy and Physiology of the Cardiovascular System
- Basic Heart Electrophysiology
- Recording a 12 Lead EKG
- Parts of the EKG machine
- Basic Analysis and Interpretation of the EKG recording
- Abnormal Rates and Rhythms
- Safety Standards and Procedures
- Heart Diseases and Medications
- Vital Signs
The combination of classroom lectures, clinical techniques and communication skills will provide the individual the ability to deliver a very important healthcare modality in a clear and concise manner. The graduate can work in hospitals, medical centers, outpatient clinics and physician’s offices.
Upon completion of the course the graduate is eligible to sit for the National Certification Examination.
Employment Outlook:
The job prospects for EKG technicians are expected to grow faster than average for all occupations due to the increasing healthcare needs of an aging population. Employment opportunities are available in hospitals, large cardiology practices, medical centers, cardiac rehabilitation clinics, and physician offices. Advanced training in Holter monitoring and stress training will provide the technician more favorable job opportunities.
A successful career as an EKG technician is dependent upon a good academic foundation, a pleasing personality and dedication to the concept of patient/customer care.
Program Admission Requirements:
- High School Diploma or GED certificate
- Completed Application Form
- A personal interview prior to enrollment. The admissions representative will clearly outline all the programs, benefits and schedules.
- No healthcare or medical office work experience is required
Program Basics:
- Certificate of Completion requiring 10 weeks to complete
- Classes in the mornings, evening and during weekends
- Student much achieve a “C” grade or better (70%) in the course to be eligible to progress and obtain certification.
